And for the rest of us…Budo-Kun’s Wine Blog Awards
AWBA, budokun, Wine Blog Awards
So Budo-Kun would love for you to download this badge and put it on your site, because not all of us can get an American Wine Blog Award, but we can all get a Budo-Kun seal of approval.
We said we’d have some biting commentary on the awards, but that conversation has already been started by Tim over at Winecast, so go there to discuss the ins and outs of awards.
We’d be honored if you wanted Budo’s seal of approval on your site. In fact, he’d be honored to be there. He’s been waiting for his close-up and this could be it. He’s also been waiting to break out into 3-D plushie form, but for now he’s just going to have to be patient with his cartoon 2-D self.
Plus, Gary V. can’t be the only one with badges all over the blogosphere? Can he? Well, maybe he can…
Click here to download the image you see to the left, and insert accordingly onto your blog. We’re all winners, right?!

2003 Rocca Family Cabernet Sauvignon, Yountville
We heard that Gary V. reviewed the 2004 yesterday and loved it. We loved that wine too, but we jumped at the chance to get the 2003 which we feel is nearly as good, since it’s a bargain at under $50 a bottle. Stellar juice from Celia Masyczek, the winemaker of Scarecrow, for a fraction of the price.2003 Rocca, please!
2006 Ferraton Cotes du Rhone Blanc, “Les Samorens”
Simon says you should check this out. And so do we. Looking for a budget white for all your summer sipping? Look no farther…Fetch me some Ferraton
2006 Eric Kent Spring Releases
We love the Eric Kent labels, and we’re even more excited about the wine inside them. Okay, scratch that. We’re equally excited, since these labels are about the best wine labels we’ve ever seen (short of our own upcoming release, which you’ll hear plenty about, eventually). Go check out the Eric Kent wines and treat yourself to a sensory experience that encompasses taste, touch, smell and sight. Can I get some Kent?

Posting reviews on wine retail sites, part 2:
As a follow up to last week’s poll, which was met with overwhelming apathy, we thought we’d pose our question about reviewing wines on web retail sites in a slightly different manner. If it were really easy to do so, do you think you’d post more reviews on domaine547, or other retailer websites for that matter (like, if you didn’t have to sign in, if you could click a few stars like you do on Netflix, or something of that nature)
Please pipe in with your response to this poll!
We’re not sure what the impediment to posting reviews is. There was overwhelming response to our poll on what you use to guide your wine purchases, with Cellartracker coming in a strong 3rd with 12% of the vote. That leads us to believe that many of you probably enter notes into Cellartracker (see the article in Good Wine Under $20 from just yesterday), in addition to reading notes posted by other Cellatracker users — so we know you’re willing to write notes in a community context.
We think it probably comes down to a couple of things: the lack of ease of use, and perhaps lack of critical mass on retail sites. We’re going to try and work on a way to remedy this…someday!

wine jargon
Frizzante
From Wikipedia: Frizzante is an Italian wine term term for semi-sparkling wine (as opposed to Spumante, which is generally used for fully sparkling wines). Frizzante wines generally owe their bubbles to a partial secondary fermentation in tank. You might notice a light fizz or tingly sensation on the tongue with a Frizzante wine, compared to the more carbonated sensation that more fully sparkling wines yield.
Scorekage
Okay, so we made up this word yesterday after a great restaurant experience. We brought a bottle of wine with us, expecting to pay a corkage fee. But the restaurant either forgot to charge us the $15, or decided to be nice to us. We scored! Hence, “scorekage” has entered our lexicon. This can also refer to BYO friendly restaurants that don’t charge for corkage under any circumstances.

Cabernet Franc in the news
There’s a good article in this morning’s Food section of the LA Times, on Cabernet Franc. It would be better, of course, if it linked to the three included wines available through d547 (Chateau Hureau Saumur-Champigny, Chateau Vieux Clos, and the Lang & Reed). But we still think you should read the piece — and then you can come back here and buy a sampling of this fantastic and under-appreciated grape variety. And we’ll give you 10% off your entire order should it include any of these wines. Use code LATimes.
domaine547 in print: Entrepreneur Magazine, April 2008 issue
We’re thrilled to see the first print article on domaine547 hit the newsstands, in April’s issue of Entrepreneur Magazine. You can see the article online by clicking here, but we promise you it’s much better in traditional paper format with its four color photo and all! Yay.

I might just withdraw our nomination! This is a much cooler logo!

Badgers? We don’t need no stinking badgers!
Oh wait…
I’m with Ryan - way cooler!

Budo-kun is a BOY??
March 21st, 2008 at 11:57 am
Cool badge! Before the stroke of midnight tonight it will be on my site and will “wear” it with pride!
I may be a loser, but that badge aint no loser.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Ohhh - I HATE you! Well, not really, but I am insanely jealous of your graphics. Totally Rockin’ with Dokken!!!
But on a more serious note (yes, I do strike one of those from time to time!), I will repeat the same comment I left over at Winecast:
If the public doesn’t vote for the AWBA winners… then who would vote? If we’re blogging for the public, why not trust that public.
Easy for me to say - I wasn’t eligible to be a finalist this time around anyway ;-).

P.S. - Mrs Duduette, who is currently in early stages of labor, had a good forgettin’-about-these-contractions chuckle at this banner.
So I owe you a bottle of something nice!
March 21st, 2008 at 2:44 pm
1WineDude OMG you left a comment on my blog WHILE your wife is in labor? AND she looked at the badge while in labor and laughed? I actually feel like I’ve accomplished something other than my infantile complaining. Thanks!
And thanks to Catie, El Jefe and Ryan for the kind words. As for Randy, Budo-kun is experiencing some gender identity issues since reading your comment.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Hey, labor takes looooooong time. Apparently - what do I know, this the 1st time I’ve ever dealt with it in person.
That doesn’t take away from your accomplishments. We really *are* all winners!
I’m smart enough, I’m good enough, and Gosh darn it - people like me!
March 21st, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Well I’m with Randy, somehow I always thought Budo-Kun was female.. When I was telling you the other day that I couldn’t remember how I found out about your site - it may have been people on CH talking about it. Anyway, when I first came here I thought you were Asian because of Budo-Kun! Looks like an anime character. I’m gonna click and download the badge right now! You got my vote!!
March 21st, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Ok, Budo-Kun is now a member of OneWinePerWeek. ; )
March 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 am
Just so long as we do NOT see an anatomically correct Budo-Kun when he makes his transmogrification into plush toy form…!
March 23rd, 2008 at 5:11 am
Heck Yeah!!
I will definitely let Budo-Kun grace my website along side Gary V. Maybe we need to make a video of Gary V and Budo-Kun in a battle royale or something. Just a thought. haha Although Gary could tag team the Oak Monster and it might be an unfair battle.
THanks for giving us blog “rejects” something to cheer about.

Nice to know my illustration / writing can be a distraction from labour pain. I may have to remember this for when my wife has our baby this July.
And Budo-kun is most certainly male. He just has that cute / Asian appearance to him because he was born here in Tokyo.
PS - First plushie goes to me. ^___^
March 24th, 2008 at 6:11 am
I just cannot imagine the s***storm that would have erupted if I was commenting on blogs while my wife was in labor. So God bless her!
I put the badge on my site. Of course, I’m happy to have not been nominated for an American Wine Blog Award - I would have to seriously question any award system that would nominate my blog. That is why makes the Budo-Kun’s Wine Blog Awards so great.
March 24th, 2008 at 6:22 am
[…] Any wine blogger not chosen as a finalist is welcome to download the bad and proudly apply it to their own blogs. You can get the badge HERE. […]

Great logo, but I can’t download it.
Let me guess, Macs are on the outs with your blog system
Too bad, being a nominated but a loser, I’d love to put this logo on my blog.
March 24th, 2008 at 7:11 am
Thanks everybody! Budo and Jill are very happy
Thomas, we’re actually Mac based so I am not sure what’s going on. Maybe try holding down the control button as you click? I’ll test it out again to see if it’s running smoothly.
Cheers!

I totally have badge-envy!!! Maybe next year, when I am eligible, I can have my blog rejected so I can give Budo-Kun’s beefcake pose on my site!
March 24th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I want a Budo Kun beanie baby!
March 24th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Fantastic.
March 24th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Waaaaaay cooler - especially for those of us not nominated. Wait, I’d have to have kept my Blog up to date and interesting for that to happen! Well, I’m about to deal with first point - and one of the first things is to put this cool badge up
March 24th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
I have to admit, I wanted in but I forgot to send an e-mail to my staff to nominate me and act like they were just some anonymous person, but being my employees, they were out reviewing Pinot in the Willamette Valley which is understandable especially because they are getting paid to do so. I was at home changing diapers and sober as a judge. Anyhow, I didn’t get one nomination, not even a faked one so I will prouldy bear the Budo-Kun standard as I feel I earned it honestly. My wife is getting it tattood on her backside too! You might wonder why I would admit this, it’s because confession is good for the soul and if you knew how much I spent this year chasing wealthy vitners who don’t care about internet advertising, you’d shake your heads in pity, or nod them in approval. Support domaine547 to get your Budo-Kun logo and wear it proudly. I will.
BTW I blogged right up untill my wife was induced. I gave a bottle of Battaion Cellars Cuvee Rouge to every nurse in the delivery room and when they clocked out, they were tossing it back. They didn’t mind and my wife knows I’m a hopeless idiot for this industry besides, she had a beautiful daughter by then.

Many, many kudos! Great idea. I have proudly put your award on my site. Currently in an article about the awards, but soon to be permanently enshrined.

Budo Kun is going up on my site as well. What a fun idea! I am proud to be in good company.
