Good Wine Under $20 Wine Blogger Sampler Pack!
As alluded to in a post earlier this week, we’ve launched our fourth Blogger Sampler Pack, chosen by none other than Dr. Debs of Good Wine Under $20. We’re thrilled. We’re excited. We’re stoked. You get the picture.
Dr. Debs’ aim with this pack was multi-fold: give all of us a trip around the world, via a few bottles of wine; show that terroir exists in even value oriented wines; and, of course, give you a whopping good deal!
Here are some excerpts from the Blogger Pack newsletter and a bit about each wine included, in Dr. Debs’ own words:
The 2003 Château Pesquié Les Terrasses is a stunning value that will instantly transport you to from the southernmost part of the Rhone with its aromas of crème de cassis, truffles, warm soil, and garrigue (the indigenous scrubby brush of the Rhone that imparts a warm, grilled herb note to their wine). Close your eyes and take in how the aromas are the perfect prelude to the flavors of blackberry, currant, white pepper, and leather.
From the south of France it’s off to southern Italy for our next wine, the 2004 Firriato Nero d’Avola Chiaramonte. When it comes do Nero d’Avola, the grapes can be transformed into a robust, peppery wine that will appeal to most Syrah lovers. In this example, you will smell the dusty roads and warm air of Sicily from the moment you uncork he bottle. Scents that I always associate with Italy, like spice and cedar, are melded with aromas of juicy black cherry. The flavors pick up these notes, and cooler notes of mint and thyme enter into the experience like a breeze from the Mediterranean. This wine has a terrific feeling in your mouth that is at once juicy and firm with a good grip of tannins medium body.
Finally we end up south of the equator, just east of Cape Town in South Africa’s most important wine region: Stellenbosch. The wine included here, the 2006 Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc, is a dry wine that has crisp fruit flavors and a streak of flinty minerality that adds complexity to the wine. Included on the Wine Spectator’s “Best Wines of 2007,” you will find when you open it that it has a bright, straw color behind all that green glass. This is a hint of the aromas of chamomile tea, straw, and citrus that rise up as your pour your first glass. When you take a sip, you will note pear and lemon flavors, a bit of chamomile flower at the very end, and something that reminds you of the smell of wet beach rocks as you move towards the finish. This wine is so interesting, and is not widely available since it is a popular, perennial choice among fans of South African wines.
So there you go…three incredible, terroir-driven wines for $45 total, and a trip around the globe to boot! Click on over to purchase the GWU20 pack and begin your journey today (ummm, or in a few days, once we’ve shipped you the stuff). As always, we have a limited number of these packs available (yadda yadda yadda).

2008 “Bebame” Red, El Dorado County, California
Cabernet Franc (65%) and Gamay (35%) from - gasp - California! And only 13% ABV, pretty modest by California standards. If I tasted this blind I would probably have said it’s from the Loire Valley. It has pretty much nothing in common with the full bodied iterations of Cab Franc coming out of Napa. Juicy, light, delicious quaffing wine.$18 a bottle
2006 Telegramme Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge
Really balanced and smooth, this is a bargain of a Chateauneuf. Yeah, the 07s are lauded but what would I prefer to drink? This! It’s the second label of Vieux Telegraphe, from the same property but from younger vines. And it’s a deal at $33 a bottle.2006 or bust!

wine jargon
Frizzante
From Wikipedia: Frizzante is an Italian wine term term for semi-sparkling wine (as opposed to Spumante, which is generally used for fully sparkling wines). Frizzante wines generally owe their bubbles to a partial secondary fermentation in tank. You might notice a light fizz or tingly sensation on the tongue with a Frizzante wine, compared to the more carbonated sensation that more fully sparkling wines yield.
Scorekage
Okay, so we made up this word yesterday after a great restaurant experience. We brought a bottle of wine with us, expecting to pay a corkage fee. But the restaurant either forgot to charge us the $15, or decided to be nice to us. We scored! Hence, “scorekage” has entered our lexicon. This can also refer to BYO friendly restaurants that don’t charge for corkage under any circumstances.
