It’s finally here! Celebrities drink wine, just like ‘US’: Sara Rue edition

August 30th, 2007

sararuewinepic_2.jpgWe said we were taking a break from blogging, but then we got the chance to sit down with our good friend Sara Rue this afternoon and talk to her about wine. We asked her a few (okay, more like a dozen-ish) questions and she answered them. And now, we’re sharing her drinking habits with the world, something we’re sure her publicist will be thrilled with.

So, without further ado, the inaugural edition of ‘Celebrities drink wine, just like ‘US’ starring Sara Rue! Woo hoo!

Note, our questions are in bold, her answers are not.

Red, White, Rosé, Sparkling or Fortified?

Yes please! All of the above.

Level of wine experience: novice, enthusiastic and eager to learn, total wine-geek, wine-snob/collector

Novice with an experienced palate. Which means, I drink wine frequently but don’t know much about it…

Favorite grape variety/type of wine or what you’ve been drinking lately?

Syrah/Shiraz

Favorite wine or winery? Least favorite?

Paige 23 Syrah is my favorite all time wine. The Turning Leaf brand is crappy. And of all the wines out there, Chardonnay is the one I’ll turn down.

Favorite brick and mortar wine shop (we know what your favorite online store is!)?

Larchmont Wine & Spirits in LA because they have the Paige 23 Syrah and good caviar too.

A glass, a bottle or a case a week (or, the “will we be seeing you at Promises any time soon” question)?

I’m thinking about getting a room at Promises but that’s purely for networking purposes. As for drinking habits, a bottle or two a week.

Favorite restaurant/wine list?

I really like the Sommelier at JAR as well as their wine list. The Sommelier there is really helpful and he’s not pretentious or snobby.

(ed. note: JAR is in Los Angeles, and they have been known to feature the Paige 23 on their menu)

Best food/wine combo you’ve had? Worst?

My favorite food and wine combo is an assortment of cheese (such as Stilton) with cranberries or blueberries, incredible olive bread and a really nice Syrah. Fruit, nuts, dates, cheese, wine. You can’t beat that.

I did just have something that should not be drunk by anybody. What was it? I’ll let you know when I remember.

Have you traveled to any wine regions? Where would you like to visit next?

I spent about a week in Napa a few years ago and I had a great time. I’d love to tell you what my favorite place was but I don’t remember because I was drunk by 10AM each morning. I’ve done some wine tasting in Provence, Tuscany, and Umbria. My favorite was in Provence. The scenery was beautiful. I seem to like Australian wines so I think I’d like to go there and check it out first hand.

Any amusing or embarrassing wine-related anecdotes?

They’re all embarrassing to me and amusing to others…once I was wearing a silver metallic dress at a Golden Globes party and I spilled red wine all over it.

Did you have a change of clothes?

No, I just went home.

Anything unrelated to these questions you feel like adding…

Not only is wine my favorite thing to drink when I’m drinking, but it makes the best gift, great for housewarmings and such. It’s very dependable, like a good friend — even if it gets you in trouble once in a while!

2007 Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde, Portugal

Bring a little “green” to your life with the Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde from Portugal. It’s actually a white wine - the green refers to its youth and freshness. It’s slightly effervescent and zippy, giving you the sense of a warm summer’s day on a cold winter’s night. This one is very easy on the wallet to boot, at just eleven buckaroos! 2007 Cortes de Cima Chaminé Red Blend

Yummy Portuguese table wine that’s a blend of Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, and a smidgen of Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s just asking to be paired with winter stews of braised meats. A great value at $19 a bottle.Buy Cortes de Cima Chaminé

2005 Amavi Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla: #42 Wine Spectator in the Top 100 of 2008!

OK, don’t screw the WS top 100! This came in at #42 and it deserves at least that. It’s the only reasonably priced domestic cab on their list, and we love it. It’s deep and rich and generous with the oaky vanilla — but not cloyingly so. Yay for #42 - just $28.

Cellartracker Embraces Twitter:

If you’re interested in wine and want a way to keep track of wines you’ve tasted, or bottles in your collection, a great place to do so is the site CellarTracker. Go over there and familiarize yourself with it. It’s really easy to use and offers the largest database of wines, along with a huge community of users who frequently post tasting notes.

Eric LeVine, the mastermind behind CellarTracker has recently become a Twitter user. You can follow him on Twitter here. And in a very significant feature addition to CellarTracker, Eric has just enabled Twitter functionality for all CellarTracker users, so that when you write a new tasting note, it will automatically post to Twitter with a link back to the CellarTracker data. Eric’s explanation and instructions can be found here.

This combo of two killer apps, a niche wine community with a Web 2.0 pioneer, could be a game changer.

(My apologies to Tim Elliott whose voice I seem to be parroting with this post!)

wine jargon

Frizzante
From Wikipedia: Frizzante is an Italian wine term term for semi-sparkling wine (as opposed to Spumante, which is generally used for fully sparkling wines). Frizzante wines generally owe their bubbles to a partial secondary fermentation in tank. You might notice a light fizz or tingly sensation on the tongue with a Frizzante wine, compared to the more carbonated sensation that more fully sparkling wines yield.

Scorekage
Okay, so we made up this word yesterday after a great restaurant experience. We brought a bottle of wine with us, expecting to pay a corkage fee. But the restaurant either forgot to charge us the $15, or decided to be nice to us. We scored! Hence, “scorekage” has entered our lexicon. This can also refer to BYO friendly restaurants that don’t charge for corkage under any circumstances.

Check out this blog post where they actually refer to somebody from d547 as a “wine expert.” Shocking! In any case, the Imbibe blog offers a nice recipe to go along with one of our wine recommendations. Enjoy!
