Winemaker - Chris Ringland
Chris Ringland has to be our favorite at the moment. He is an Aussie who was honored as 2006’s Barossa (Australia) Winemaker of the Year. We love to learn about how vintners got their start, and Chris’s launch into winemaking is one of the more intriguing we’ve heard. Apparently, for no specific reason he can recall, Ringland began making wine as a pre-teen. Precocious, huh? He has been obsessed ever since.

Chris was finishing off the set up of the telescope to see McNaught (a comet) the night it was the brightest in the sky, here in Australia. The picture was taken on the 15th of January this year.
Currently, Ringland has his hand in many pots. He’s winemaker for 3 Rings and Pillar Box Red (Australian projects with US importer Dan Philips), Bodegas Alto Moncayo and Bodegas El Nido (both in Spain, and in concert with noted US importer Jorge Ordonez) and RBJ and Rockford (Australia). Over the past 15 years has consulted with and made wine for Greenock Creek and Hobbs among others.
Additionally, Ringland is helping Dan Philips with the transition of Australian winery Marquis Philips, since Sarah and Sparky Marquis left their eponymous enterprise to start up Mollydooker. Having tasted the latest Marquis Philips Shiraz 9 release, we would say that it’s one fine transition.
Check out anything by Chris you can get your hands on, from the low priced Pillar Box Red, to the reasonably priced Alto Moncayo Veraton, to the higher priced El Nido Clio, to the luxury priced Alto Moncayo Aquilon. We carry some of Chris’s wine’s in our store, if you care to pick up a bottle or two.
Of course, with all of Chris’s globetrotting, we’re hoping he might eventually find some time to grace California’s vineyards with his Midas touch.

Frizzante
From Wikipedia: Frizzante is an Italian wine term term for semi-sparkling wine (as opposed to Spumante, which is generally used for fully sparkling wines). Frizzante wines generally owe their bubbles to a partial secondary fermentation in tank. You might notice a light fizz or tingly sensation on the tongue with a Frizzante wine, compared to the more carbonated sensation that more fully sparkling wines yield.
Scorekage
Okay, so we made up this word yesterday after a great restaurant experience. We brought a bottle of wine with us, expecting to pay a corkage fee. But the restaurant either forgot to charge us the $15, or decided to be nice to us. We scored! Hence, “scorekage” has entered our lexicon. This can also refer to BYO friendly restaurants that don’t charge for corkage under any circumstances.
